Step by step

  • 1

Register with Hacienda: Model 036 or 037

    Go to official site

First, register in the Employer Census at the Agencia Tributaria in Barcelona through model 037 (simplified) or 036 (full). You can do this online with a digital certificate or in person at the AEAT office.

    !

    Expert tip

"Model 037 is valid for most self-employed individuals without employees. If you have doubts about the subheading, consult the AEAT activity search tool. In Barcelona, some notaries offer this service for €50-100 if you prefer to delegate it."

  • 2

    Register with Social Security: RETA

    Go to official site

Within 60 natural days (best option is the same day), register in the RETA at the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social. You can do this online with a digital certificate or at the nearest TGSS office in Barcelona.

    !

    Expert tip

"If you register before the 1st of the month, the monthly fee is paid in full for that month. If it's after the 1st, it's prorated. Optimal date: the 1st of the month."

  • 3

Choose the base for contributions according to estimated income

With the system in effect since 2023, the monthly contribution is adjusted based on your actual net earnings. You must provide an estimate of your annual income. This can be changed up to six times a year.

    !

    Expert tip

"If you're new as self-employed, apply for the flat rate (€80/month during the first 12 months, extendable if income is below SMI). Select 'Application for flat rate' in registration."

  • 4

Declare your registration with the IAE (if applicable)

Most self-employed individuals (turnover < €1 million) are exempt from the Business Activities Tax. If you exceed this threshold, you must register.

    !

    Expert tip

"Almost all individual self-employers are exempt from the IAE. You generally don't need to do any additional paperwork with the city hall in most cases."

  • 5

Consult Generalitat of Catalonia aids for new self-employed

    Go to official site

Catalonia offers grants and subsidies for new self-employed individuals through SOC (Service of Employment of Catalonia) and the Department of Enterprise. Check current calls for funding.

    !

    Expert tip

"SOC provides grants up to €10,000 for self-employed in specific groups (young people, women, long-term unemployed). Check if you meet the requirements."

Frequently asked questions

How much do self-employed pay monthly in 2026?
With the system of income-based contributions, the fee ranges from €200 per month (very low earnings) to €590 per month (high earnings). New self-employed can apply for a flat rate: €80 per month for the first 12 months, extendable if annual net income is below the SMIC.
Are there any aids for self-employed in Barcelona or Catalonia?
Yes. Besides the national flat rate, the Generalitat of Catalonia and SOC offer grants to new self-employed, especially young people under 30, women, and long-term unemployed. Check funding calls at empresa.gencat.cat.
Do I need a digital certificate for online registration?
Yes. To process the online registration with the AEAT and Social Security portals, you need a digital certificate (FNMT), DNI e, or Cl@ve access. In Catalonia, you can also use the Generalitat's digital certificate (idCAT).
Can I be self-employed and work for someone else as well?
Yes. Pluriactivity is legal. If you already contribute to Social Security through employment, there’s a bonus in your RETA contribution to avoid excessive double contribution.
Do I need to submit model 303 of VAT in Barcelona?
If your activity is subject to VAT (most are), you must submit the model 303 quarterly at the AEAT office. It can be done online. You also need to file model 130 (franked payments from IRPF) if you pay income tax on a direct basis.
